PREFACE
This First French Book has been prepared with the aid of an accomplished Frenchman, Prof. Amédée de Rougemont. It is on the same plan as the author's First German Book, and, like it, is the real outgrowth of school-room experience.
This little book is intended for beginners wishing to learn the spoken language of France. The special aim is to supply all that must be taught the pupil in order to enable him to understand and use the French. It is not a treatise on the language. [1]
Method of this book.
The peculiar features of its method are Pestalozzian in character. It differs, however, widely from all other methods of teaching foreign language.
- This course teaches the French language without the help of the learner’s vernacular.
- It bases linguistic instruction upon a direct appeal to a pictorial illustration of the object entioned. In no instance is the student left to guess at what is said. He is clearly instructed and speaks always understandingly.
- ↑ The fontnotes contain a large amount of information, and their contents, being needful for the student's progress in reading, should be carefully read by the teacher and studied by the pupil.
