Mais ce beau dieu qui les arts favorise
De ses présents vous enrichit comme eux,

My dear Tiriot, I write to you in English for the same reason that abbot Boileau wrote in Latin ; I mean, that I should not be understood by many over-curious people.

That I love you is very certain ; that I never received a letter from you these ten months, and that I should have received them, had you written any, is equaly true. I pardon your neglect, you lazy créature, but I do not forgive your telling me you have written ten letters when you have write none.

I thank you extremely for your having drudged and danced many an attendance, for my sake, at Bologni’s and at the Treasury. I do not wonder at your kindness, nor at the bad success, since misfortune attends me every where.

As to the Henriade. I think you may easily get a private licence of printing it : I intend in about a fortnight to ask that licence. In the mean time you must go to M. Hérault, the lieutenant de police. I have already sent one copy of the Henriade to him, and intreated him to seize all the copies which might steal into France till I had leave from the government to publish the book. I have assured him I would never send into France any thing without the consent of the ministry ; therefore it will be very proper for you to speak to him in the same manner, and to in-
