Le manuscrit français dont on offre ici la traduction, a été conçu et compose au milieu même du peuple qui est décrit. L’eloignement absolu où l’auteur, pendant une longue suite d’années, s’est trouve de toute société européenne, l’a mis dans une position favorable pour scruter les replis obscurs et jusqu’alors inconnus du caractère indien ; mais il l’a aussi dérobé lui-même à la curiosité de ses lecteurs. Tout ce qu’on sait de lui, dans ce pays, se réduit à ce qu’a pu en apprendre la dépêche suivante, écrite par le gouverneur en son conseil au fort Saint-George, du 24 décembre 1807, à l’honorable cour des directeurs de la compagnie des Indes-Orientales, et qu’elle a bien voulu permettre au traducteur de rendre publique :

The french manuscript of which a translation is here offered to the public, was meditated and composed in the midst of the people whom it describes. The absolute retirement of the anthor from european society, for a series of years, well qualified him for penetrating into the dark and unexplored recesses of the indian character; but it has also veiled himself in an equal degree from the curiosity of his readers. The little that is known of him in this country may be collected from the follwing dispatch of the governor in council at fort Saint-George, of the 24.th december 1807, to the honorable the court of directors of the East India company, which they have been pleased to allow the translator to publish:
