LE MARQUIS DE CRÉMANT

François Audebert était assis en face du feu, dans la salle au plancher gris fraîchement arrosé et balayé, aux chaises de paille symétriquement rangées le long des murs, aux rideaux de calicot trop petits, mais bien blancs entre lesquels apparaissait la campagne. Son bonnet de soie noire ne tenait déjà plus droit sur sa tête, et son pantalon de gros drap marron remontait sur ses genoux, faisant voir par un large intervalle ses chaussons de Strasbourg et ses bas bleus. Ses lunettes, cependant, étaient parfaitement assujetties, et ses mains potelées maniaient un livre avec l’aisance qui trahit une longue habitude. Bientôt il s’agita sur son fauteuil, regarda autour de lui avec une sorte d’étonnement, et murmura quelque chose entre ses deux bonnes grosses lèvres.
Au même instant on entendit au-dessous, puis dans un escalier, puis dans un corridor, une charge d’infanterie légère, plus tapageuse d’ailleurs, et surtout plus inégale que ne l’eût été celle d’un bataillon. Une porte s’ouvrit, et cinq ou six écoliers débouchèrent vêtus de costumes divers, mais chargés de livres identiques. Ils saluèrent le digne magister, qui hocha légèrement la tête en manière de reproche, et murmura :
— Toujours en retard, messieurs !… Nous allons voir si la leçon est sue, au moins ! — De Torcil, mon ami, je ne sais pas pourquoi vous continuez de porter cette veste de coutil à la fin d’octobre. Votre père vous a donné un vêtement plus chaud. — Et vous, de Varesne, je vous ai déjà dit de prendre des bas de laine !
Il ouvrit son livre, chercha une page, et continua :
« Nous disions donc, messieurs, que Cicéron… »

Je fais grâce au lecteur de la leçon. J’aime mieux leur dire qui était l’excellent M. Audebert, maître de pension au village de Saint-Mesme, depuis vingt ans.
François Audebert avait été dans sa jeunesse précepteur dans une des meilleures familles du Périgord. Lorsque, après avoir conduit l’éducation de ses élèves de manière à s’attirer l’estime générale, il les eut mis en état d’entrer aux écoles spéciales, il lui fallut penser à s’enquérir d’une nouvelle condition.
Cette idée lui fut pénible. La famille de Favières l’avait toujours traité comme un de ses membres, et lui s’était accoutumé à croire qu’il en faisait partie. Une maison étrangère l’effrayait. La destinée lui montrait son chemin. Il revint à Crémant, vieilli, brisé.
Au printemps dernier, il est mort d’une sorte de consomption. Mademoiselle de Crémant l’a enseveli.
