1. ALEXANDER Archibald, théologien protestant américain, né à Augusta (maintenant Rockbridge) le 17 avril 1772, mort à Princeton le 22 octobre 1851. Il fut l’organisateur et le premier professeur du Princeton theological Seminary, en 1812, et exerça une grande influence sur l’Église presbytérienne des États-Unis, à laquelle il appartenait. On lui doit, entre autres ouvrages, Canon of the Old and New Testament, Philadelphie, 1826 ; History of the Patriarchs, Philadelphie, 1833 ; History of the Israelitish nation, Philadelphie, 1853. Il prépara aussi le Bible Dictionary, publié à Philadelphie, en 1831, par l’American Sunday School Union, ouvrage qui eut un très grand succès. Son fils, le Dr J. W. Alexander, a écrit sa vie, Life of Rev. A. Alexander, New York, 1854.
