Il se prépara à la mort avec un calme et une piété égale à celles de Laud. Il fut décapité le 30 janvier 164g. L’Eglise anglicane, qui allait être, pendant onze ans, privée de ses évoques et subir les pires calamités, considère que Charles I"" est mort pour sa défense. Elle n’a pas tort.
