Témoignage du Capitaine Horace Scott[1]
Horace Scott, of the City of Quebec, in the District of Quebec, Captain, aged 23 years, being duly sworn upon the Holy Evangelists, doth depose and say :
THE CORONER : Do you recollect on Sunday having had a conversation by telephone — on Sunday afternoon or evening — with the Chief of Police of Quebec about some trouble in St. Rochs ?
A. Yes sir.
Q. Will you tell the jury what happened then, what was said then ?
A. It was in the evening, it was on Sunday evening.
Q. What time ?
A. Well, the mob was going towards lower town, that is, towards St. Paul Street and there was a telephone call in Col. O’Neara’s office. I was at that time in Col. O’Neara’s office. It was in French and I was asked to take the conversation. It was a very excited voice at the other end of the ’phone which said that we had promised a picket to be down in front — down at Palace Hill, that is, the foot of Palace Hill by the C.P.R. Station. He said the picket was not there, the crowd was coming, send them down right away by Palace Hill and to shoot at them. That was the conversation that took place then. After I asked who was speaking and I was told.
Q. Who ?
A. It was the Chief of Police Quebec. I repeated that conversation to Col. O’Neara.
Q. Did that conversation take place in French or in English ?
A. Took place in French.
Q. Do you understand French well ?
A. I do.
Q. Do you speak French ?
A. Yes. I speak French.
Q. How did he say that in French, repeat it in French ?
The evidence of the witness is continued in the French language and taken down in at stenography by Mr. A. Belinge, official Stenographer.

Interrogé par le Coroner : —
Q. Dites donc en français ce qu’il vous a dit ?
R. Il a dit qu’il fallait s’en aller vers la rue St Paul et qu’on avait promis un piquet qui serait là et il dit d’envoyer d’autres par la Côte du Palais et de tirer dessus.
Q. Sur la foule ?
R. Dans la foule. J’ai demandé qui est-ce qui parlait et il dit : « C’est le chef de Police, le Capitaine Trudel. »
Q. Vous avez compris ça, qu’il avait dit de tirer dessus ?
R. Oui.
Le Capt. Barclay :
Q. L’a-t-il dit une fois, de tirer dessus ?
R. Non, il l’a dit plusieurs fois.
Q. Interrogé par M. Lesage :
Q. Pouvez vous jurer que c’est bien le Chef de Police qui vous a dit ça ?
R. Bien, je ne l’ai pas vû.
Q. Pouvez vous admettre qu’un autre que le Chef de Police aurait pu vous jouer ce tour-là ?
R. Je ne sais pas.
Interrogé par Mtre. F. Gosselin :
Q. Il est bien possible qu’un homme vous ait téléphoné en vous demandant d’envoyer un piquet de tirer sur les manifestants, sans que ça fût le Chef Trudel,… il est bien possible que ça fût un autre homme ?
R. Ça peut être possible, certainement.
Q. En somme, vous jurez seulement que vous avez entendu ces paroles-là, mais vous ne pouvez pas jurer que c’est
bien le Chef qui a dit cela ?
R. Non, c’est impossible.
INTERROGÉ par le Major Barclay :
Q. Connaissez vous la voix du Chef ?
R. Oui, je l’ai déjà entendue plusieurs fois.
Le Coroner.
Q. Vous rappelez-vous qui si vous avez reconnu
sa voix au téléphone ?
R. C’était bien comme lui.
Q. C’était bien la voix du Chef ?
R. Oui.
Q. Vous avez reconnu sa voix ?
R. Je ne peux pas dire que je l’ai reconnue, mais c’était bien comme sa voix, c’est comme je le connais.
INTERROGÉ par Mtre. F. Gosselin :
Q. Vous avez dit que c’était une voix qui semblait excitée, un peu ?
R. Oui certainement.
Q. Ça pouvait être un peu changé aussi ?
R. Oui, peut-être.
Et le témoin ne dit rien de plus.
